Minister Charlie McConalogue is backing Heather Humphreys in Friday's presidential election.
Donegal Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State Charlie McConalogue has confirmed that he will be supporting Heather Humphreys in the presidential election this coming Friday, October 24.
“I have seen from working with Heather Humphreys her capabilities and know her to be a person of high calibre and good judgement, and someone who understands the needs of rural Ireland in particular," the Minister of State for Sport and Postal Policy commented.
Minister McConalogue has highlighted the “significant difference” between the two candidates on the issue of Ireland’s place in the EU.
“The role of President is an important one because of the leadership that the office holder provides to our country, both domestically and on the international stage. As a country it is important that we are open to trade and maintain good relationships internationally.”
“Our approach to the European Union in particular has been crucial to the development of our country and to the economic progress we have seen in Donegal over the past generation. As a border county we know too well the perils that Brexit posed and there is a significant difference between the two presidential candidates on the issue of our place in Europe.”

With Catherine Connolly well ahead in the polls and Jim Gavin out of the race, Minister McConalogue said it remains important for everyone to exercise their right to vote.
“I know it has been disappointing for Fianna Fáil supporters and many voters who do not have a Fianna Fáil candidate to vote for in this election. However, it is important that everyone does take the time to vote on Friday and exercises their judgement on which candidate is best placed to represent the country at home and abroad as President over the next seven years.”
“I am in no doubt that Heather Humphreys is that candidate in this election and I will be voting for her this coming Friday.”
