Shock as The Red Door Country Hous announces imminent closure
The Red Door Country House in Fahan has announced that it is to close its doors after this weekend.
From this coming Monday, 27th October, the popular Fahan business will cease trading in its current capacity after 16 years, as it heads in a different direction.
The Red Door, which has been serving food and drink on Thursday and Friday evenings as well as lunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays, announced on its social media channels today that the business is heading in a new direction, operating solely as a private events and wedding destination.
Customers with gift vouchers are being urged to use them over the next four days or to contact management for a refund.
In a notice on social media, The Red Door team said: “If you have a valid gift voucher that you would like refunded, please send an email with a photo of your voucher, together with your contact number to info@thereddoor.ie before 30th November 2025.”
Formerly called St. John’s, the country house venue was relaunched as The Red Door in 2009 by Shay McCallion and his wife Adelle.
The popular country house on the shores of Lough Swilly has seen a lot of changes since it was built in the 18th century. Ownership over the past two centuries has included some well-known names, including the owners of Watts Distillery in Derry, the Stewart-Libertys, and musician Phil Coulter. Nell Stewart-Liberty is the former publisher of Social & Personal magazine. She now lives in Château Soussac in Bordeaux, France. Nell’s parents and grandparents owned St. John’s before selling it to Phil Coulter, and she lived here until she was 25.

The late Reggie Ryan and his wife Phil bought the house from Phil Coulter in 1979 and opened it as a restaurant in 1980.
The current owners bought the building when the Ryans retired and opened it for business under the name of ‘The Red Door Country House’ on 13th February 2009.
