The community of Buncrana will come together later this month to remember the late David Magee with a special charity walk in his memory.

David sadly passed away in January of this year following a cardiac arrest. On Saturday, November 15th, which would have been his 50th birthday, friends, family, and locals will come together to raise money in his memory for Buncrana’s Community First Responders, doing one of his favourite pastimes – a 5-kilometre walk.

The memorial walk will begin at 12:30pm at Buncrana Shore Front, continuing to Fr Hegarty’s Rock and back again.

David was well-known throughout Inishowen, having managed Fort Dunree for almost two decades. Outside of work, he was an avid runner who regularly took part in local Park Runs.

On one such run in Dungloe in November of 2019, David collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest.

Fellow runner Hugh McLaughlin, who was just behind him, immediately stepped in, using First Aid and CPR training he had received only months earlier to help save David’s life.

Without Hugh’s quick heroic actions, David may not have survived that day. It was a powerful reminder of the life-saving role first aiders play across the country.

Tragically, in January this year, David would suffer another cardiac arrest and, unfortunately, pass away despite the best efforts of Buncrana First Responders who attended the emergency call at Fort Dunree after they were alerted by the National Ambulance Service.

The Buncrana CFRs worked tirelessly to try to save David, but sadly, this time, it wasn’t meant to be. However, his family and friends remain eternally grateful for their efforts and for the invaluable work they do every day in the community.

The Magee family chose Buncrana Community First Responders as the beneficiaries of the event to highlight the vital work they do and support their ongoing work to host CPR demos, raise first response awareness, and continue to attend callouts when necessary in the Buncrana area.

The volunteer group provides emergency support while waiting for paramedics to arrive, offering critical care when every second counts.
