Body of fisherman recovered from the water off Arranmore Island, Gardai confirm

The lost fisherman had been fishing out of Greencastle for many years.

Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a fisherman recovered from the water off the coast of Donegal yesterday.

A mayday call was made of a man overboard from a fishing vessel off Arranmore Island at approximately 1.25pm on Tuesday, November 11.

He was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital later that evening, where he was pronounced dead.

It is understood that the man, aged in his 40s, was originally from Eastern Europe but had been fishing on Greencastle boats for some years, and lived locally in the area.

A technical examination of the boat has been carried out, and the vessel is now back at Greencastle Pier.

The Coroner, Dr Denis McCauley, has been notified of the sudden death.

A post-mortem will be carried out by the State Pathologist and Gardai have said that the results of the post-mortem will determine the course of any investigation.

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board and the Health and Safety Authority has also been notified of the tragedy.
