Stormont insight for Coláiste Eoghain students

Coláiste Eoghain students visiting Stormont and learning about political life in Northern Ireland

Students from Coláiste Eoghain in Buncrana enjoyed an informative and inspiring visit to Stormont this week as part of a joint History and CSPE field trip.

The group spent the day exploring the political heart of Northern Ireland and learning about how decisions are made within the Assembly.

The students were given a guided tour of the building, conducted entirely through Irish. They visited the Great Hall, the main chamber, and the committee room, gaining a strong sense of both the history and current workings of Northern Ireland.

Staff at Stormont also delivered a presentation outlining how political structures function and how legislation is shaped.

During the visit, the group met Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan, who discussed his work on the Education Committee. They also encountered the Deputy Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), Robbie Butler MLA, and Jon Burrows MLA, also of UUP, as they moved through the historical building, adding to the sense of a bustling political environment.

After their time at Stormont, students enjoyed a well-deserved break with a trip to the Belfast Christmas Markets. They spent the afternoon exploring the festive stalls, sampling seasonal treats, and enjoying the lively atmosphere in the city centre.

Dáire Ó Néill, Deputy Principal at Coláiste Eoghain organised the trip. Speaking after the visit, he said: “The visit allowed our students to see political processes first-hand, which deepens their understanding of democracy and civic responsibility.”

“Being at Stormont gave our students a chance to use Irish in a real public setting, helping them feel more confident speaking the language outside the classroom,” Mr Ó Néill added.

Overall, the experience offered the students a unique opportunity to witness political life up close, enriching both their academic studies and their appreciation of civic engagement.
