Buncrana water issues resurface just days after boil notice lifted

4,000 people were affected by the boil water notice in Buncrana last week that saw a run on bottled water in local supermarkets

The discolouration of the water supply in Buncrana is under investigation again.

Residents in the Carraig Fern area of Buncrana have reported instances of discoloured tap water, prompting an investigation by Uisce Éireann.

South Inishowen Councillor Joy Beard confirmed she has been receiving reports from concerned residents and has raised the issue with the national water utility.

“This issue is currently under investigation,” Councillor Beard said. “My personal advice to residents is not to drink the water if it is discoloured, including using it for tea, coffee, baby formula, brushing teeth, or cooking, until the issue is resolved.”

Uisce Éireann has since confirmed that site checks were carried out in the area and that no significant issues were identified on the network. However, the utility acknowledged that a small number of customers experienced temporary discolouration.

As a precautionary measure, Uisce Éireann crews will carry out scouring of the local water network to ensure water quality is fully restored.

A spokesperson for Uisce Éireann said discoloured water is “usually temporary” and is most often caused by natural sediment or mineral deposits being disturbed within the water network. This can occur following changes in water flow, such as maintenance works, bursts, network recharging, or periods of low usage followed by high demand.

The latest discolouration in the water supply comes only a week after a boil notice for 4,000 people in the town was lifted due to a mechanical issue at the Buncrana (Slavery) Water Treatment Plant, which affected the disinfection process.

Residents experiencing discoloured water are advised to run the cold kitchen tap for several minutes, which often helps restore clarity. Water should not be used for drinking or food preparation until it runs clear.

Anyone experiencing ongoing issues is advised to contact Uisce Éireann’s 24-hour customer care line on 1800 278 278.
