Inishowen Credit Union issues fraud alert after scam text circulates

Inishowen Credit Union warns about possible scam

Inishowen Credit Union has issued an urgent warning to members following reports of a fraudulent text message currently in circulation.

The scam SMS, which has also been reported across a number of credit unions, falsely claims to be from the recipient’s credit union and urges them to call a phone number included in the message.

The number of the text that the message is sent from is not associated with Inishowen Credit Union.

Members are being strongly advised not to call the number contained in the text and not to engage with the message in any way.

The fraudulent message forms part of a wider smishing scam, where criminals impersonate trusted financial institutions in an attempt to obtain confidential information.

Inishowen Credit Union has reminded members of its strict security policy whereby the credit union will never ask customers for their PIN or One-Time Passcodes.

A spokesperson for Inishowen Credit Union said they take the protection of members’ accounts extremely seriously and encourages anyone who receives a suspicious message or who is unsure about any communication claiming to be from the credit union to make direct contact immediately.

Members can contact Inishowen Credit Union directly on 074 9361017 for verification and support.
