The programme culminates in Spraoi agus Spórt’s much-loved 5K family fun run/walk on May 29
Spraoi agus Spórt in Carndonagh has launched its 2026 Couch to 5K programme.
The programme is now open for bookings, inviting people of all ages and fitness levels to take that first step whether that means walking, jogging, or running.
The eight-week programme starts on Tuesday, April 7 and takes place every Tuesday and Friday at 6.30pm, in Spraoi agus Spórt’s Unit 6 premises, below Supervalu.
Experienced coaches from Inishowen Athletics Club will be there to guide participants along the way.
The cost for the whole programme is just €20 which includes entry to the much-loved 5K family fun run/walk on May 29 plus a free Couch to 5K participant T-shirt.
The programme has become a favourite in the local calendar, according to organiser, Mary McWeeney of Spraoi agus Spórt.
“This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to get moving and feel healthier, all in a really supportive environment. Whether you’re starting from scratch or getting back into fitness, you can go at your own pace. The main thing is showing up and enjoying it.”
She says the social side is a big part of what makes it special.
“I’ve done the Couch to 5K every year since it began. You meet new people, get some fresh air, and always feel great afterwards. It’s something people really look forward to.”
One of the programme’s most inspiring success stories is Shirley McLaughlin, who first signed up in 2016.
“I hadn’t really exercised much before and just wanted to get fit,” she says. “I was delighted when I completed the 5K at the end of the training and then joined Inishowen AC, who helped me through the programme.”
Since then, Shirley hasn’t looked back.
“The club encouraged me to do my first 10km, and last year I completed the Extreme North Quadrathlon — four half marathons in four days. Now I’m training for the Dublin Marathon. I still can’t believe how far I’ve come.”

The programme culminates in Spraoi agus Spórt’s much-loved 5K family fun run/walk on May 29, an event that brings together families, beginners and seasoned runners for a relaxed, feel-good evening.
“It’s always one of the highlights of our year,” Mary said.
“The atmosphere is fantastic, and it’s a great way to celebrate everything the participants have achieved.”
Full event details, including route and timings, will be announced closer to the date.
The event also helps fund special needs assistants so that children with disabilities and/or autism can take part in Spraoi agus Spórt camps and activities.
“Inclusion is at the heart of what we do,” Mary says. “By taking part, you’re not only improving your own health — you’re helping us make sure every child in our community can join in.”
