Bradley welcomes publication of map and route for Buncrana’s Aghilly Road project

Cllr Fionan Bradley says his priority now is to secure the funding for the Aghilly Road project to progress.

Fianna Fail Councillor and Leas Cathaoirleach of the Inishowen MD, Cllr Fionán Bradley, has welcomed the publication of the map identifying the route selection and scope of works for the Aghilly road project in Buncrana.

The improvement project will upgrade an 890-metre stretch of the Aghilly Road area, commencing at the junction at Ferris Lane/Magherinture Rd and concluding at the junction at Hillhead Road and Ardaravan Park.

The works will include the installation of active travel infrastructure, road realignment, and junction upgrades.

“Following the announcement recently that a funding application has been submitted to the Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund, I have received many queries from constituents in the Ardaravan, Aghilly, Milltown and Hillhead areas in relation to the selected route. I subsequently requested that Donegal County Council publish the map to provide clarity to all residents in the area,” Cllr Bradley explained.

The scope of works remains unchanged from the initial scope, which was set out over twenty years ago.

However, Cllr Bradley says it’s bewildering that a footpath from the entrance to Mulberry Avenue down to the top of the Hillhead is not included in the application.

“It is beyond belief that this was not identified as a priority when the route was selected originally. I have been in contact with the local engineer and have asked that other funding be secured as soon as possible to complete this vital section on what is a busy and dangerous road.”

He added: “My priority now is to secure the funding for the Aghilly Road project to progress, and I wish to reassure the residents in Mulberry Avenue and the Hillhead areas that I will continue to pursue the issue of a footpath from their estate down into the town centre as a matter of urgency.”
