Moville hosts a hands-on bat conservation programme
A new community initiative in Inishowen is inviting locals to discover what really happens after dark, and it’s all about bats.
The Inishowen Development Partnership (IDP), in collaboration with Moville Men’s Shed, has launched an exciting new programme called BAT-WATCH, aimed at helping people connect with nature while supporting local biodiversity.
Starting on April 24th, the five-session programme Moville Men’s Shed will guide participants through a hands-on journey into the world of bats. From learning how to use bat detectors to building and installing their own bat boxes, attendees will gain practical skills while contributing to the monitoring of local bat habitats.
Sessions will take place across several dates between April and September, covering everything from introductory techniques to licensed habitat observation and bat box inspections. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore different habitats and better understand the role bats play in the local ecosystem.
Organisers say the programme is ideal for anyone with an interest in wildlife, outdoor learning, or creative, practical projects. No prior experience is needed, making it accessible to the wider community.
The initiative is free to attend, with all materials, along with food and refreshments, provided throughout the sessions. However, places are limited, and early booking is essential.
BAT-WATCH is funded through the Healthy Active Rural Communities (HARC) Project, part of the wider PEACEPLUS Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.
The team at Moville Men’s Shed says they are proud to host and facilitate the programme, highlighting its value as an open and inclusive event for the general public.
