Tractor enthusiasts come together in Carndonagh to pay tribute to the late Danny McColgan

A charity ploughing event held in Foden, Carndonagh, has raised funds for the Friends of Letterkenny University Hospital in memory of much-loved Inishowen man Danny McColgan.

The second annual ploughing event took place on Saturday, August 22, beside Carn GAA, with tractor enthusiasts coming together to pay tribute to Danny, who had a lifelong passion for vintage tractors, particularly Davy Browns.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the Friends of Letterkenny University Hospital, with the organisers extending their gratitude to everyone who supported the fundraiser.

The event featured a range of plough types, with an entry fee of €30 per tractor, while spectators were invited to make a donation. A perpetual cup was also presented for the first prize.

Danny, from Ballynamona, Culkeeny, Malin, died in March 2025 following illness. He was 68 and was a father-of-six and devoted grandfather.

His family and friends have previously raised more than €8,000 for good causes in his memory.

Last year, €4,000 was presented to the Friends of Letterkenny Hospital and €3,000 to the Donegal Hospice, while a further €1,400 had already been donated to the Hospice following Danny’s wake.

The family also donated ten recliner chairs, heat pads, a small fridge, microwave, cups and hampers to the Oncology Ward at Letterkenny University Hospital to improve comfort for patients and their families.

Danny was also a lifelong supporter of Donegal GAA and Malin GAA, and was inducted into the Malin GAA Hall of Fame in 2017.
