Gardai clamp down on rogue parkers at Inishowen Blue Flag Beach

Labour Councillor brands those who block roads and park on double yellow lines as “totally irresponsible and disrespectful”
Motorists heading to one of Inishowen’s most popular beaches during the ongoing heatwave have been warned that anyone parking illegally and blocking access roads at Shroove Beach faces being ticketed, clamped or having their vehicle towed away by Gardaí.
With the spell of hot weather expected to continue for at least another week, large crowds are once again expected to flock to the Blue Flag beach just north of Greencastle.
Gardaí will be in attendance at Shroove once again today to crack down on rogue parking after chaotic scenes at the weekend.
It’s understood that two vehicles were towed away yesterday [Monday], while ten or more tickets were issued to motorists in respect of illegally parked cars.
Shroove Beach has a dedicated car park, but it quickly reaches capacity during periods of fine weather. Once it is full, some motorists have been abandoning their vehicles along the narrow approach roads, causing major disruption and creating serious safety concerns.
Cllr Martin Farren said the situation had become unacceptable despite double yellow lines having been installed along the approach roads a number of months back at his request.
“These roads must be kept clear for emergency access. If something were to happen on the beach then the emergency services wouldn't be able to quickly attend the scene,” he said.
“The emergency services have to be able to access that beach at all times. Shroove is a very popular Blue Flag beach and it's imperative that it remains accessible.”
He also revealed how the public bus service had once again been unable to complete its scheduled route because of the illegally parked vehicles.
“The public bus service has also had to be cancelled because the bus can't get through. Cars were basically abandoned and just thrown there, either side of the road, and that's just not acceptable.”
Cllr Farren contacted Gardaí after receiving reports that roads around the beach had once again become blocked on Sunday.
"Sunday was very, very busy and it was brought to my attention on Sunday evening that everyone had been parking on these double yellow lines – and it was basically mayhem down there. Once again, the bus was unable to get through."
He praised Gardaí for their swift response after asking them to enforce the parking restrictions.
“I asked the guards to go down yesterday [Monday], and they went down there and did a magnificent job. They towed two cars away and issued ten or more parking tickets to different drivers.”
The Labour Councillor had strong words for those ignoring the parking restrictions, branding their behaviour as “totally irresponsible and disrespectful”.
He said motorists who park illegally are showing little regard for local residents, the authorities, or the safety of other beach users.
While acknowledging that extending the existing car park could be explored in the future, Cllr Farren stressed that the immediate priority is ensuring people park responsibly.
“My biggest concern is to ensure there's proper access at all times,” he said.
“I would ask people to respect the double yellow lines; they've been put there for a reason. We would ask all motorists to be respectful.”
Cllr Farren also thanked Donegal County Council for installing the double yellow lines and commended Gardaí for their continued enforcement efforts at Shroove.
With temperatures expected to remain high throughout the coming week and visitor numbers likely to stay exceptionally busy, motorists are being urged to use only designated parking areas and avoid blocking roads.
