New Cathaoirleach of Letterkenny-Milford MD Ciaran Brogan and outgoing Cathaoirleach Gerry McMonagle
Fianna Fáil Councillor Ciaran Brogan has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District - and stressed the importance of working together.
Letterkenny-based Cllr Brogan, who has served as the leas-cathaoirleach for the past year, returns to the position he previously held in 2015-16. He was first elected to Letterkenny Urban District Council in 1999 and the County Council in 2004.
The handover ceremony took place at the Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting at the Milford Public Service Centre. Cllr Brogan was supported by his wife Lorraine, son Odhran, daughter Maoliosa and long-time friend Anthony Arthur (Pigeon).
His fellow Fianna Fáil councillor, Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly, proposed Cllr Brogan for the role, citing his “wealth of experience” of 26 years in local politics.
“I have no doubt he will represent us to a very high standard,” added Cllr Kelly.
The proposal was seconded by Cllr Donal Coyle.
Accepting his new role, Cllr Brogan said: “I’m delighted to have this honour and I’m looking forward to working with every one of you.
“We might not agree all the time and that’s fine too,” he added. “It would be no good if we were all sheep. Mutual respect is something I hold very close and it’s important that whatever anyone’s opinion is, is heard.”
Cllr Brogan also paid special tribute to the councillors who have passed away.
Outgoing Cathaoirleach, Sinn Féin’s Gerry McMonagle, congratulated Cllr Brogan, saying: “This is a new term with new challenges ahead and there’s nobody with better qualities to face them.”
Councillors thanked Cllr McMonagle for his contribution as Cathaoirleach and praised him for attending events throughout the year.
