Under plans for Letterkenny 2040, Letterkenny Market Square will undergo significant developments
Works will begin on transforming Letterkenny Market Square towards the end of January 2026.
This was confirmed at a recent special plenary meeting of Donegal County Council. Councillors were briefed on a number of community development projects that are planned across the county.
The works on the Market Square are part of plans for Letterkenny Regeneration Strategy 2040. A total of €3,500,000 has been allocated for the Market Square project.

The Urban Regeneration Fund (URF) is funding 75 per cent of the project, or €2,625,00. The remaining €875,000 is funded by Donegal County Council.
The project is currently at contractor pre-appointment stage. Construction will commence in late January 2026.
Under the plans for Letterkenny 2040, the Market Square will be reimagined as an open gathering space with possibility of market stalls returning and an outdoor performance area.

Letterkenny 2040 has been commissioned by Donegal County Council, led by the Regeneration and Development Team and is funded by the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), a flagship initiative of Project Ireland 2040. It forms part of a wider programme of regeneration initiatives that are also supported by URDF and are being progressed including design and development of walking and cycling infrastructure, strategic land acquisition for the purposes of regeneration, reuse of the former courthouse and the redevelopment of Market Square.
