Mayor of Letterkenny Ciaran Brogan has announced plans to host receptions recognising the contributions of two prominent Letterkenny figures.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Brogan received council approval to honour Ben Sweeney, owner of the long established Ben Sweeney Euronics, and Consultant Breast and General Surgeon, Mr Michael Sugrue.

Cllr Brogan hailed Mr Sweeney as one of the town’s longest serving businessmen, who can still be seen opening the gates of his shop every day at 8am.

Mr Sweeney founded his business, Ben Sweeney Electrical, on the Port Road more than 50 years ago. The company expanded to Dungloe in 1995 and later joined the Euronics group.

Cllr Brogan said Mr Sweeney has witnessed vast change in Letterkenny during his decades in business.

The second reception will honour Mr Michael Sugrue, who will retire from his leadership role at Letterkenny University Hospital this Thursday, March 12.

Mr Sugrue has worked as a surgeon at the hospital since 2008 and has led significant research and clinical advancements there throughout his career.

He also played a key role in the campaign for a surgical hub at the hospital, a game-changing development expected to be delivered in the near future.

Cllr Brogan said councillors have had a strong working relationship with Mr Sugrue over the years.

The dates of the events will be agreed in due course.
