The late Richard Finney.
There is widespread shock and sadness following the death of Letterkenny-based businessman Richard Finney.
The team at the Counter Deli say they are ‘devastated’ at his sudden passing.,
Richard, who was originally from Lisburn, set up The Counter Deli after previously running the Wine Buff shop in Letterkenny. Recently, Richard set up New Kid Coffee, Donegal’s first speciality coffee roastery, at Bonagee.
“He was an absolute gent who was always up for a laugh and a bit of craic,” the Counter Deli said in a tribute.
“He was also an inspirational entrepreneur and became an expert in anything he set his mind to – accountancy (though he would prefer we didn’t draw attention to this!), wine and let’s not forget a quality cup of coffee!
“Together with Olivia, he built the Counter and, more recently, New Kid Coffee from scratch – two amazing businesses loved by locals here in Letterkenny and across all of Ireland.
“If this wasn’t enough, Richard loved extra-curricular activities too! He had a keen interest in guitars and was known to belt out a wee tune with Mia and Matthew on vocals at any given opportunity. He also helped to coach the local football team and loved seeing the lads progress.
“If ever there was proof that a husband and wife can work together, it was Richard and Olivia. After that initial gaze over the calculators at EY, they had eyes for no-one else! It’s difficult to find the words to say but, put simply, Olivia was the ying to Richard’s yang and they made the BEST team.
“Richard was loved by all and, as a mark of respect to the main man, the Counter will be closed for the rest of this week. Richard’s passing is mourned by his wife Olivia and children Mia and Matthew.
Bonagee United, where Richard coached with the under-12 ‘Arcade’ team, have also paid tribute, saying: “Bonagee United is saddened to learn of the passing of Richard Finney.
“Our sincere sympathies are extended to his wife Olivia, children Mia and Matthew and all of the extended Finney family. May he rest in peace.”
