A member of Letterkenny Golf Club who tragically died on a golfing trip to Portugal yesterday has been named locally as Mark Doherty.

Mark, originally from Strabane, worked in taxation from his home at Thorndale in Letterkenny, where he was married to Ann and has a son Ciaran, who is based in Australia.

Mark, 63, was part of a group from Letterkenny who went on their annual trip to Vilamoura in Portugal on Sunday, flying from Dublin to Faro. He was a popular member of the travelling party having worked on the committee of Letterkenny Golf Club.

On Monday, the group were playing the first round of their holiday at Dom Pedro Millennium Golf Course, when Mark began to experience difficulties on the course. He later passed away having been taken by an ambulance to the local hospital.

A post-mortem is expected to take place in the coming days. The group remains in Portugal with Mark’s remains and this morning attended a local church to pay their respects.
