Public invited to consultation on Carrigans to Lifford greenway project

A third public consultation on the Emerging Preferred Route Corridor for the Carrigans to Lifford Greenway Project will take place.

Donegal County Council with the support of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) invite residents of the area, members of the public and other interested parties to participate.

The Emerging Preferred Route Corridor aims to provide an attractive trail between the border at Carrigans and Lifford, mainly to be used for recreational purposes by pedestrians, cyclists and people with impaired mobility. 

Two in-person public consultation events will take place in St Johnston and Lifford as follows: Monday, August 18: 14:00-20:00 in St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre, Chapel Road, St Johnston, F93 VHK7 and Tuesday, August 19: 14:00 - 20:00 Old Courthouse, The Diamond, Lifford, F93 CD6F.

Delivery of such a greenway would not only provide a great recreational facility and social support for local communities but also provide important cross-border linkages to both Derry and Strabane via the North West Greenway Network and in future, the proposed Inishowen Greenway Network.

The Greenway would draw domestic and international visitors to the area benefitting the social and economic factors in the settlements located along the selected route. It will also act as a valuable corridor providing a safe, sustainable and healthy modal option for all users.

The project is currently nearing the completion of the Phase 2: Option Selection process. In November 2024, the second non-statutory public consultation was held, which presented the route corridor options that had been identified following the completion of the Preliminary Options Assessment.

These options have been subject to a further detailed assessment in accordance with the TII Project Manager’s Manual for Greenway Projects, TII Project Appraisal Guidelines and the Department of Transport’s Transport Appraisal Framework leading to the identification of the Emerging Preferred Route Corridor. The identified Emerging Preferred Route Corridor is considered, on balance, to offer the best performance against the identified objectives for the project and the various appraisal criteria identified.

The purpose of the third non-statutory public consultation is to inform the public of this Emerging Preferred Route Corridor and to invite their feedback. Members of the project team will be in attendance to explain the proposals and discuss any relevant views or concerns directly.

After the conclusion of the in-person consultation events, public displays will be made available until Friday, September 5 at the following location: Donegal County Council, County House, Lifford F93 Y622. Opening hours 09:00 - 16:30 (Monday - Friday).

For members of the public who cannot attend the events, a virtual consultation room will be available on the project website with all relevant information and interactive mapping.
