Deele Community Anglers in Convoy are launching the ‘Peacebuilding Through the Environment’ countywide community climate action and mitigation programme.

This is a county wide PEACEPLUS Funded Initiative that has several strands addressing the need for individualised and community-based climate actions within the county, and cuts across several initiatives on personal climate actions, engagement, education and capacity-building.

This new community based environmental project focusing on the rural environment will be launched at Mongorry Lake outside Raphoe on Tuesday, February 3 at 11am. The PEACEPLUS “Peacebuilding Through the Environment” project will be delivered by Deele Community Anglers CLG, a local community-based sporting organisation with extensive experience in environmental awareness.

The launch event is an opportunity for people to learn more about the project, activities they can try out and what supports will be available to grass-roots groups.

This flagship initiative, delivered under Theme 2: Thriving and Peaceful Communities, is supported by a significant investment of €200,000.00. It is one of 32 cross-community projects within Donegal’s ambitious €7.6 Million PEACEPLUS Local Community Action Plan. The project aims to give local people in the wider rural community an opportunity to explore environmental issues of concern to them. Participants will explore and engage with their local environment, completing local actions designed to improve the environment, heritage biodiversity and water quality management. The project will engage with the network of community-based groups, schools and other interested organisations across the county and will help them identify environmental challenges, gaps and issues they could address.

The programme will aim to have long-term impact regarding climate adaption across Donegal.

This new project is an opportunity for the club to work with the wider community on a series of environmental improvements and activities.

The chair of Deele Community Anglers, David Scott said: “We are delighted that PEACEPLUS has entrusted us with this funding, it is another step along the way for us and the local community to play a part in managing environmental issues. Anyone interested in being part of this project can reach us through our Facebook page, where our team will be happy to help, or by calling at our office at Convoy Enterprise Centre”
