Donegal one of two counties forecast to avoid the worst of the weekend weather

Last month was the wettest July on record

Only two counties in Ireland are to escape the worst of the wet and windy weather over the weekend - Donegal and Limerick.

Met Éireann have reported that the counties are the only counties with no rain or wind warnings on Friday night into Saturday.  All other counties have been issued yellow weather warnings which include spells of heavy rain from Friday evening through Saturday morning.

The news comes after the wettest July on record, surpassing that of 2009, which held the previous record.  It’s a welcome break for the north-west, as on July 22 the automatic weather station at Raphoe showed 76.4mm on July 22 - the highest anywhere in the country. A funding package of €125,000 was approved by the government last week.

Met Éireann are advising people in affected counties of the possible impacts including spot flooding, poor visibility, and difficult travelling conditions.

“With the unseasonable weather expected over the weekend, especially with more people on the move for the bank holiday, we ask people to keep an eye on the forecast and any possible warnings for their area,” Meteorologist Aoife Kealy said.
