A dog is now safe in the care of a leading Donegal animal welfare charity after its owner asked a vet to remove all of her pet's teeth.

The vet did not carry out the requested procedure, and the alternative solution was agreed. The dog was surrendered to Animals in Need.

A spokesperson for Animals in Need posted on social media: "We hear many heartbreaking reasons why people have to give up their pets. Divorce, death in the family, loss of jobs etc. but some of the excuses and reasons we hear are beyond reason.

"Recently a woman rang. She had to rehome her dog as he had started to bite car tyres. Her way of 'fixing' this was to ring the vets to get an appointment for them to remove his teeth!"

"Much to her annoyance- the vet refused."

More on the work being carried out by Animals in Need and on their charity shop, rescue animals and how to support the animals in the charity's care can be found on the Animals in Need Facebook page and in their weekly column in the Donegal Post in shops now.
