There is much sadness in south Donegal at the death of one of its best known businessmen, Ignatius Herron, better known as Nacy.
The popular Donegal Town businessman, late of Drimark, Donegal Town and St John's Point, Dunkineely, died peacefully on Thursday following a short illness. He passed away at the Mater Private Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
The news was shared on the Facebook page of Herron Auto, the family business, with a post saying: “We are closed until further notice due to the sad passing of Nacy Herron.
“A much loved character who will be greatly missed by all your friends and work colleagues in the Herron Auto family.
“Rest in peace Nacy.”
Herron Auto was established as an Opel and Kia dealership in 1990, having replaced Nacy’s former Opel dealership, O & I Motors on the same premises.
Over the decades, Nacy built up a loyal customer base, and developed a solid family business which is now run by the next generation.
For many people - including the author of this article - he will be remembered as the school bus driver, conveying pupils from the rural parts of Killymard parish to Ballydevitt NS.
Many of the people commenting on the Herron Auto Facebook post describe Nacy as a gentleman and a great character.
Nacy’s remains are reposing at his late residence at St John’s Point, Dunkineely, Eircode F94 R624, on Friday and Saturday, January 12 and 13 from 2pm until 9pm. A one-way system will operate at the wake, with entry via the first junction at Killaghtee on the Dunkineely side, and exit at the second junction on the Killybegs side.
Removal from there on Sunday, January 14, going to St Mary’s Church, Killymard for funeral Mass at 2pm, with burial afterwards in the local cemetery.
Predeceased by his sister Nuala, Nacy is survived by his wife Roisin, children Orla (Gary), Enda (Sharon), Niamh (Norman), Paul and Alan (Caroline); his brother Cathal and sister Una, and his ten adored grandchildren.
