Residents in the Manorcunningham area who have been beset by ongoing water issues are finally set to see a resolution.

Uisce Éireann last week started work on the replacement of 3km of damaged water mains. Householders in various locations experienced regular interruption to their supply due to the aged water mains that were in place.

Residents in areas such as Raymoghy, Rossbracken, Pluck and Errity’s Brae experienced a frustrating volume of outages during Christmas and New Year.

In the last couple of years, some houses were without water on Christmas Day, St Patrick’s Day and Easter Sunday, but their woes will be at an end once the works are completed.

Councillor Donal Kelly has been an ardent campaigner for the affected area and has hailed the advancement of works.

“I’m delighted for the residents in these areas that this long ongoing issue is now going to be resolved once and for all,” Fianna Fáil Councillor Kelly said.

“Since I took my seat I have been contacted by residents on numerous occasions in the past two years. They were very concerned and frustrated and residents were at there wits end with ongoing water bursts and outages.

“What has been going on in these areas was absolutely ridiculous.

“This is absolutely brilliant news for the people concerned. I want to thank the people affected for the patience they have shown. I’m delighted for them all that these ongoing issues will beresolved once and for all.”

The works are currently being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme along the L1154 and L1294 from Pluck through Manorcunningham up to Errity.

The project also involves laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road, to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

Project Manager for Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, Patricia Lowry, said: “Old and damaged water mains remain a huge source of leakage and continue to impact communities right across County Donegal, causing low pressure and supply disruption. Replacing these old water mains in poor condition in Pluck, Manorcunningham will eliminate existing leaks and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.

“The delivery of these essential works will help provide a safer, more secure water supply for Manorcunningham by minimising the frequency of bursts and improving the resilience of the network.”
