Almost €30m allocated in funding to Donegal roads and greenways

New funding will see Letterkenny to Burtonort greenway moving ahead. Huge funding has also been allocated to works on McGrory's Brae

Almost €30m allocated in funding to Donegal roads and greenways

Donegal has been allocated €29.8 million for national roads and greenways this year. 

The allocations will be made to local authorities across the country through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). A total of over €440 million has been allocated to national roads and greenways nationwide. 

A total of €22.8 million has been allocated for roads, €3,845,000 is to be invested in greenways, while €2,020,000 has been committed to progressing with continuing preparation, design and planning works on the Ten-T Donegal Projects. 

Works on McGrory's Brae Improvement scheme will be allocated will be allocated €3, 400,000. Lurgybrack to Listillion Pavement Scheme will be allocated €1,700,000 and the Laghey to Drumnacroil Pavement Scheme will be allocated €2,150,000. 

The Letterkenny to Burtonport greenway has been allocated €1 million euro in an announcement which sees greenways across the county receive almost €4 million in funding. 

Greenways across the county will benefit as result of the TII grant allocation. The Barnesmore Gap greenway is to receive €600,000, the NRO regional Greenways support has been allocated €320,000 and the Carrigans to Lifford Greenway is expected to receive €325,000. Meanwhile, the Inishowen greenway, Three Trees to Carndonagh  is expected to receive €400,000, the Inishowen greenway from Bridgend to Buncrana and Newtowncunningham has been allocated €500,000 and from Buncrana to Carndonagh has been allocated €700,000. 

The national secondary roads from Dungloe to Glenties has been allocated €80,000 and the route from Mountcharles to Inver has been allocated €20,000.

Minister, Charlie McConalogue, said:“The substantial new funding allocated today is hugely important for national roads and greenways here in Donegal. I am pleased that Donegal has received the third highest allocation nationally.”

"A top priority of Fianna Fáil in Government is continuing to invest in the maintenance and improvement of our road network to make it as safe as possible while improving regional connectivity and supporting regional economic development.”

Deputy McConalogue said the county was recently allocated €36.2 million for its regional and local roads. It was confirmed this week that €600 million was allocated to the A5 Derry to Aughnacloy Road and agreement was reached to progress the Donegal Ten T Road Projects recently.

The Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District Cllr Michael McClafferty welcomed the funding for the Glenties area. 

He said: "I welcome the money allocated to the Burtonport to Letterkenny greenway. It is also great to see major road works planned for Gortahork and footpaths planned between Gortahork and Falcarragh. 

"It is also great to see that Dungloe, Portnablagh and Dunfanaghy have all been allocated significant money for the coming year."
