Deaths in Donegal, Wednesday evening, March 13, 2024

The following deaths have taken place:

John Doherty, St Anne's, Moyle Road, Newtowncunningham

The death has occurred in Altnagalvin Hospital of John Doherty, St Anne’s Moyle Road, Newtowncunningham formerly Sheriffs Mountain, Glenowen.

John will be lovingly missed by his wife Agnes, son Kieran, daughters Jacinta Hegarty and Oonagh McDermott, daughter-in-law Marlena and son-in-law Keith and Martin and Grandson Reuben, brothers and sisters Nicki, Michael, Phylis and Mary and all his extended family and friends.

John was predeceased by his brothers and sister James, Charlie, Kevin and Eileen.

John will be reposing at his late residence from tomorrow Thursday March 14 from 11am to 8.30pm finishing with Rosary.

Family time on the morning of the funeral please.

Funeral from his late residence, St Anne’s, Moyle Road, on Friday morning March 15 at 10.20am going to All Saints Church, Newtowncunningham for 11am requiem mass with burial afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery.

Paddy Gill, Cockhill

The death has occurred of Paddy Gill, 2 St Mary’s Park, Cockhill, in Donegal Hospice.

Father of James, Mark and Sharon, brother of Liam, Hughie and Mary, sadly missed by Marie and extended family and friends.

Remains will repose at McLaughlin’s Funeral Home, Buncrana today, Wednesday, from 6pm until 9pm and tomorrow from 4pm until removal at 7pm to St Mary’s Church, Cockhill to repose overnight.

Requiem Mass there on Friday, March 15, at 11am with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.

Carmel Mullally-Powers Letterkenny and USA

The death has occurred of Carmel Mullally-Powers Letterkenny and St. Charles, Illinois, USA on March 9, 2024. The widow of Stephen T. Powers, an architect.

She was a native of Letterkenny. They married on September 20, 1980. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Mary (Molly) Mullally, and sisters Attracta, Brighid (Mackey), Clare (Doherty, Canada), Teresa (Ireland), and brother, Thomas (London).

Survivors include, her brother, Stephen, (Ireland), many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Ireland and Canada, especially Kevin Doherty (Canada) & Michael Mackey (Wexford, Ireland); brother-in-law, Robert Powers (Susan); sisters-in-law, Katherine (Michael) Carlson, Ann (Tom) Turrin, & Mary (Kevin) Donovan; stepson, Steven Powers III.

A memorial mass will be held at 10.30am on Friday, March 22, 2024, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 East Main Street, St. Charles.

Interment of cremains will follow at Prairie Cemetery, St. Charles. Arrangements handled by Yurs Funeral Home.

Ellen Breen (née McGonigle), Kilcloon, Meath and formerly of Glenkeen

The death has occurred of Ellen Breen (née McGonigle), Kilcloon, Meath and formerly of Glenkeen.

Peacefully, surrounded by her loving family and the loving staff of St Francis Hospice Blanchardstown. 

Ellen deeply regretted by her loving husband Jeremiah, daughter Roisin, sons Jerry, Seamus and Sean, son-in-law Thomas, daughters-in-law Tracy, Jan and Marie, cherished grandchildren Ashley, Thomas, Aoife, Daniel and Amy and great-grandchild Jesse, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. May her gentle soul Rest in Peace

Reposing at William Ryan & Sons Funeral Home, Church St. Kilcock (W23 XC90) on Wednesday, March 13, from 4pm to 7pm. Removal on Thursday to Glenkeen, reposing there from 6pm. 

Removal on Friday morning to St. Mary's Church, Bocan, Culdaff, arriving for Requiem Mass 11am followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. 

Donations, if desired, to St. Francis Hospice, Blanchardstown.

John Maher, Laghey and Westmeath

The death has occurred of John Maher, Walshestown, Mullingar, Co Westmeath and Laghey.He passed away in the company of his loving family following a brief illness at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.

A dearly loved partner, son and brother, John will be very sadly missed and forever remembered by his heartbroken family, his partner and best friend Catriona (Doherty), his parents Martin and Geraldine, brother Alan and sister Susan, extended family and the Doherty family, his many friends and clubmates in Shandonagh GAA Mullingar and Naoimh Bríd GAA Laghey.

His remains are reposing at Gilsenan’s Funeral Home Mullingar (N91 K660) on Wednesday from 4pm to 6.30pm followed by Removal to the Church of the Assumption Walshestown arriving at 7pm. House strictly private please.

John’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11am followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Family flowers only please; donations, if desired, to Beaumont Hospital Foundation or Friends of Sligo Hospital.
