A partial eclipse can be seen across Ireland tonight where the moon blocks part of the sun
A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible in Donegal this evening.
The eclipse will begin at 7:55pm and will be visible for approximately 28 minutes on Monday, April 8.
At 7:55pm, the moment the edge of the moon touches the edge of the sun is called first contact. At 8:13pm, the maximum eclipse will be visible, which is the deepest point, where the sun is most hidden and at 8:22pm the sun will set.
According to Astronomy Ireland, everybody in Ireland will be able to see the eclipse but the best views of the will come on the west coast of Ireland.

A solar eclipse occurs when an enlarged moon passes between Earth and the Sun, therefore obstructing the view of the sun. In a total eclipse, the sun is fully covered by the moon for a duration and in a partial eclipse, the moon blocks part of the sun, leaving it looking like ‘a chunk or a bite’ has been taken out of the sun.
Globally, the event is a total solar eclipse which will be visible in parts of the USA and Canada. Events like this are infrequent, with the next total eclipse occurring on August 12, 2026.
