Donegal County Council has launched a probe into an alleged unauthorised bituminous coal processing plant.
Concerns have been flagged with the local authority and an investigation has started into the plant, which is in the Inishowen area.
Members of the public have raised issue with the development and following an allegation citing an unauthourised development at the site the Council has begun to explore the claims.
The matter is being examined under the provisions of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended) with the aim of establishing the nature of any potential unauthorised development, a spokesperson for Donegal County Council has confirmed to Donegal Live.
“Given the enforcement processes involved with any potential unauthorised development case Donegal County Council will not be making any further comment on the matter,” the spokesperson said.
One person who contacted Donegal Live raised concerns over possible health risks associated with such a development and said they believed that a “significant load” of bituminous coal was expected to arrive “very soon”.
There are also fears regarding the possible discharge of waste into local waterways.
The sale of smoky solid fuels, including bituminous coal, wet timber and turf, is banned in over 20 urban areas in Ireland, including in Letterkenny.
