As Paddy prepares for a well-earned retirement, he said: “It is with great pleasure that I announce the next chapter for Ward’s Music Shop.
“I will be handing over the keys to this cherished establishment to the esteemed musician and music teacher, Kevin O’ Donnell of O’Donnell School of Music.
“For years, Ward’s Music Shop has been more than just a business – it has been a vibrant hub for South-West Donegal and beyond. Located in the heart of Donegal Town, a key staging post for visitors to experience our region’s rich history, breathtaking scenery, and thriving musical culture, the shop has welcomed countless tourists and musicians alike.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all my loyal customers for their unwavering support and friendship over the years. Your patronage has made this journey truly remarkable.
“I am confident that Kevin will elevate the shop to new heights and nurture a new generation of musicians. I wish him every success in the years ahead.
“Guím gach rath amach anseo.”
Kevin O'Donnell, known for his deep roots in the traditional music scene, expressed excitement about continuing the legacy of the shop.
"I have always admired Paddy Ward’s commitment to the community and the love for music that has been at the heart of this shop for so many years," he said. "Taking over this space feels like a natural next step, and I am looking forward to maintaining the shop’s tradition while adding my own touch to meet the evolving needs of musicians."
As the founder of O'Donnell School of Music, Kevin is a well-respected figure in Donegal's music education scene. His expertise in teaching a wide range of instruments has earned him a loyal following over the years. Many of his students are local, and his school has become an essential part of Donegal's musical community.
"My goal is to provide a welcoming environment where both seasoned musicians and beginners can find what they need,” he said.
The transition comes at a time when the music industry is evolving, and Kevin hopes to adapt the shop to meet modern demands.
"I will keep the personal touch that people expect from a family-run business while embracing digital platforms to make it easier for people to access what they need, whether that’s online ordering or virtual music lessons,” he said.
As Kevin steps into his new role, the community can expect the continued vibrancy and heart of a business that has been serving Donegal Town for nearly four decades. Paddy Ward’s Music Shop may have a new owner, but its commitment to music, community, and education remains as strong as ever.
No doubt, Paddy will still be seen popping in for a friendly visit and a few tunes.
