Scoil Niall Mór, Killybegs were crowned Champions at the County Final of the Donegal Garda Road Safety Schools Quiz in front of a full house at the Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny on Thursday evening.
This initiative which has been run by Gardaí in the Donegal Division for over 30 years continues to be supported by the Donegal Road Safety Working Group represented by Pamela Smullen, Road Safety Officer for Donegal County Council, the Donegal Motor Club who were represented on the night by club officer John Crumlish and the Road Safety Authority.
Louise McKeever from the RSA was present on the night and held and interactive road safety competition with all of the finalists.
This competition was won on the night by Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala, Donegal Town.
The quiz itself is held annually across the entire county. Heats were held in each of the four Garda Districts in February, with the qualifiers moving on to the County Final.
Scoil Niall Mór came out of top this year with a very high standard of answers with, what were some tricky questions.
They were closely followed in second place by Creevy National School, Ballyshannon who just pipped Scoil Naomh Fiachra, Illistrin (who finished third) in a tie breaker round.
Superintendent David Kelly and Pamela Smullen addressed the audience and reminded everyone present that they have a responsibility to try to make our roads safer. Superintendent Kelly spoke in particular to the children reminding them that they are the roads users of the future.
Thanks were paid to all of the schools who took part in the quiz across the county, which was almost 90 schools this year and the finalists were congratulated on reaching the final.
The teachers and parents were also congratulated in guiding these children and encouraging them to participate in this initiative.
Superintendent Kelly thanked the Pamela Smullen, The Donegal Road Safety Working Group, Donegal Motor Club and the RSA for their continued support of this event.
He also thanked all of his Garda colleagues across the Donegal Garda Division who organised and ran this event, adding a special welcome to a number of trainee Gardaí, recently allocated to stations in Donegal as part of their training who were present on the night, wishing the well in their careers.
