The St Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop posted to social media recently, with a spokesperson saying: “These baby items and electrical items were left at the shop this week and now have to be disposed of at a cost to the society.
“Please do not leave baby items or electrical goods as we are unable to resell them.
“There is a big sign outside the front of the shop that explains the items that we cannot accept.”
The Animals in Need charity shop has been facing similar issues, and had to discontinue use of their out-of-hours donation box.
A spokesperson said: “No donations outside of opening hours. We are sorry to close this drop-off facility due to misuse.
“Thank you to all our genuine supporters.”
Donations to the Animal in Need shop can be made during opening hours, 11am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday, or by arrangement via 087 7644420.
We are sorry for any inconvenience caused, but we are wasting a lot of money disposing of this rubbish,” added the spokesperson.
These and other charity shops around the county are providing a vital service, not only supporting their respective charities, but also in offering lower cost clothing and household items.
They are an absolute lifeline for struggling families facing expenses at back-to-school time and on occasions such as First Holy Communion and even weddings.
Shops rely on the goodwill of volunteers and those who donate, and with the rising cost of overheads, it is vital that no unnecessary costs are incurred.
