Three brought ashore by Bundoran lifeboat after vessel breaks down off St John's Point

Three people were brought ashore after their vessel got into difficulty off St John’s Point on Wednesday night.

The volunteer crew from the Bundoran RNLI was requested at 10.08pm following reports of the vessel experiencing engine failure approximately five miles east of St John’s Point. 

The lifeboat, helmed by Brian Gillespie and crewed by Richard Gillespie, Finn Mullen, and Oisín Cassidy, launched swiftly into 0.5 metre swell within 10 minutes of the pagers sounding.

Upon arrival at the scene, the crew found three people onboard the broken-down vessel, all of whom were wearing floatation devices and were safe. 

After assessing the situation and given that the boat could not make any safe onward progress, the lifeboat crew safely established a tow line and brought the vessel back to Creevy Pier.

Speaking after the call out, Bundoran RNLI Helm Brian Gillespie praised the swift response of the volunteer crew.

He said: “Thanks to the quick actions of our team, we were able to reach the vessel promptly and ensure the safety of those onboard. We always advise anyone heading out to sea to ensure their vessel is in good working order and to carry a means of calling for help.”

Bundoran RNLI has reminded all boat users to always check the weather and tides, ensure equipment is working correctly, and to wear lifejackets at all times.
