Five Donegal schools achieve Nature Hero Award from Biodiversity in Schools

A total of five schools across Donegal have achieved Nature Hero Awards for their great work in biodiversity and environmental education.

Carndonagh CS; St Peters NS, Mountcharles; Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala, Donegal Town; Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada; Arranmore and St Davadog's NS, Tawny, all achieved awards.

Carndonagh CS was singled out for a Special Commendation for Habitat Data collection for their detailed recording of hedge and tree species on campus, exemplifying the idea that in order to protect nature one must know nature.

“Outdoor learning has transformed the way our students connect with nature. They’re more engaged, curious, and passionate about protecting the planet,” said Principal Dáire Diver of St. Peter's National School, Mountcharles We would like to give a special mention to Peter Haggan for everything he has done for the development of our school garden and sharing his knowledge of nature and biodiversity. The Nature Hero award is a reflection of all their hard work and dedication.”

The Nature Hero Awards, coordinated by Biodiversity in Schools and sponsored by Glenveagh, received registrations from 316 schools around Ireland representing over 93,000 students. The awards help schools to positively steward their local land, improving biodiversity and educating young nature heroes throughout Ireland.

The schools received a certificate to mark their great effort over the year, and a few schools that completed exemplary work also received a sustainably-made, Irish, wooden Nature Hero Award plaque. Two schools achieved the level of a Bronze Badger award, two achieved the level of Silver Stag, and one achieved the level of Golden Eagle.
