A gathering on Sunday at Ramelton Quay on the River Lennon was one of many nationwide on Irish coasts, rivers and other waterways to mark the launch of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which sets sail to Gaza from Barcelona.

The gatherings are a show of support and collective solidarity both with the besieged Palestinian people and with the international volunteer crew that attempts to break  Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza. Many Irish citizens are taking part in this mission alongside sailors, doctors, nurses and activists from across the globe.

Other events took place in Belfast, Newcastle (Co Down), Dublin, Kildare, Wexford, Cork,  Kerry, Achill Island and Galway to mark the launch of this historic humanitarian mission.

Irish citizens set sail from Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday as part of an international humanitarian mission to break Israel’s illegal blockade on Gaza and open a vital humanitarian corridor through which sufficient aid can flow.

The Global Movement to Gaza's latest mission, 'The Global Sumud Flotilla', will see dozens of boats with participants from over 40 countries sailing through international waters towards the shores of Gaza. The boats are also carrying life-saving humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza who are being forcibly starved by Israel's illegal blockade.

Citizens from around the world have come together to launch this mission in reaction to major government inaction and international complicity in the face of the ongoing genocide and engineered starvation of the Palestinian people.

While some Irish citizens will crew boats to Gaza, scores more citizens work tirelessly at home in Ireland to ensure the mission's success and raise awareness locally and nationally.
