Speaking in the Dáil on a motion regarding Child Poverty and Homelessness, Deputy Charles Ward called on the government to prevent further physical and psychological damage to the children of the defective concrete crisis.
The Donegal Deputy said: ‘Hundreds of children in Donegal face homelessness, and hundreds more are living in crumbling, unsafe homes, due to the defective concrete crisis. The sense of security and belonging that a home is supposed to provide, is stripped away from these children as the walls crumble around them, and they are forced to leave the home they grew up in.’
Deputy Ward addressed Minister Christopher O'Sullivan: "This is extremely psychologically damaging, Minister, to the children and their parents who lie awake at night, fearful for their families’ safety. While substantial harm has already occurred, we can prevent further physical and psychological damage to the children of the defective concrete crisis if we act now.’
The 100% Redress TD supported the Labour motion, which called on the government to introduce a total ban on the eviction of children into homelessness and introduce legislation to prioritise the housing needs of homeless families.
Deputy Ward said: ‘As a parent, it is unimaginable that over a quarter of a million children lack a warm home, a nutritious meal or a winter coat. It is even more unimaginable that over 5,000 children in this country are currently homeless. Homelessness has devastating and long-lasting negative effects on children's physical and mental health.’
