A motorist has been arrested and will now face court following discoveries made after his car crashed in Letterkenny.
Gardaí from the Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit responded to a report of a road traffic collision on Wednesday, November 19. The roads were icy at this time but fortunately nobody was injured as a result of the single-car crash.
However, upon inspecting the vehicle, gardaí discovered "extremely bald" front tyres. As well as this, the driver of the car failed a roadside breath test. It was confirmed that he was arrested and charged to appear in court.
Sharing news of the arrest on social media, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána in Donegal said, "Please do not take any type of risks on the roads. NEVER drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Check your tyres regularly and even more regularly when the tread depth reaches 3mm.
"Ensure that your tyres have plenty of tread and are above the legal limit of 1.6mm (1mm for motorcycles). The more worn that your tyres become, the less grip they will have on the road surface. It therefore takes longer to stop a vehicle when the road surface is wet. We urge motorists to always conduct the necessary safety checks on their vehicle before undertaking each journey. Do not take to the roads if it is not in a roadworthy condition," they added.
