There is a notable 14% variation in breast cancer survival rates depending on the county patients live in
Donegal lags the national average for survival rates for breast cancer in the country.
Data released to Aontu following a PQ (Parliamentary Question) shows that the five-year survival rate in the county is 87.1% in contrast to the average countrywide figure, Donegal lags behind national average for breast cancer survival rates which is 87.3%. The rate is 94% in Cavan, 92.6% in Kildare, and 90% in Cork, while it drops to 80.3% in Limerick.
Aontú rep for Donegal, Mary T Sweeney, says: “The data obtained by my party via a PQ (Parliamentary Question) reveals significant regional disparities in breast cancer survival rates across Ireland. I find this wholly unacceptable and worrying.

“There is a notable 14% variation in breast cancer survival rates depending on the county patients live in, which is deeply concerning.
“Additionally, Aontú has found a 12% difference in survival outcomes between women diagnosed in public hospitals versus private hospitals. These discrepancies highlight critical challenges within our healthcare system, including instances where patients face delays in chemotherapy and missed targets for radiation treatment.
“It is imperative that both geographic location and economic standing do not have an impact on whether a person lives or dies. Increased staffing and further investment in hospital resources are necessary so that no patient deemed fit for treatment remains on a waiting list. Early diagnosis and prompt access to care are key factors in reducing cancer mortality rates.”
