Fintra National School to close doors for final time in June after 185 years

Fintra National School is to close at the end of this academic year after a failure to attract a sufficient number of new enrolments to stay open.
A meeting of the board of management this week confirmed that the school is to begin taking steps to close from the end of June.
An extension of a deadline until Wednesday of this week attracted just one enrolment in addition to one previous application this year.
The school, which is located 2.5kms from Killybegs, has an enrolment of four. It has an educational staff of four teachers and three special needs assistants, according to its website. It opened in 1841 and was reconstructed in 1961.
Efforts have been underway to increase pupil numbers since early this year which included an open day, the offer of a preschool breakfast club and afterschool service, an enrolment video and a survey of prospective parents.
The school’s board of management met on Wednesday, April 22 to discuss the future of the school.
“One enrolment has been received during the past week,” the school said in a statement.
“After careful consideration and with deep regret, the Board will now liaise with school Patron, Bishop Niall Coll, regarding the closure of the school from the end of June 2026. The Board will continue to keep the community updated.”
