Death of Liam McGowan

Liam McGowan, Ballyshannon

There is sadness in Ballyshannon today with the news of the death of Liam McGowan, Clyhore.

A warm, kind and friendly man, Liam died peacefully on Friday in the North West Hospice in Sligo.

He will be fondly remembered by his many former colleagues in the Donegal Democrat where he worked for a long number of years.

During the days when the Democrat was published and printed in Ballyshannon, Liam was a valued member of the staff, working as the Democrat’s delivery man.

With the paper quite literally ‘hot off the press’ on a Thursday morning in the Democrat offices on Donegal Road, Liam delivered the weekly edition to shops and premises all around the south Donegal region and into north Leitrim

The Democrat was also a busy printing company, and the rest of Liam’s week involved making deliveries to the Democrat’s printing customers all around the area.

He was also a handy man around the office, and members of the news team will also fondly recall Liam giving them lifts to various court markings or council meetings in the Democrat van.

After his retirement from the Democrat, Liam kept himself busy, and was a keen gardener, and he cut lawns for people all around his home town.

He will be sadly missed by his many friends and family members, especially his wife Phyllis, nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was predeceased by his sisters Maureen O'Donoghue and Nuala Dunne and brother Pat.

Liam’s remains are reposing today (Saturday) from 5pm until 8pm at John McGee & Sons Funeral Home, Belleek Rd, Ballyshannon.

Reposing Sunday at his late residence at  Clyhore, Ballyshannon from 3pm until 9pm with removal on Monday morning to St. Patrick's Church, Ballyshannon for 11am funeral Mass with burial afterwards in Abbey Cemetery.
