Donegal GAA player Peadar Morgan and friends who did a vitual Goal Mile in Mountcharles last year
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the first GOAL Mile which was run in Dublin.
And here in Donegal, the GOAL mile challenge has always been a popular event around Christmas time, with participants running a mile to raise funds for the poorest and most vulnerable communities across the world.
This year, the county will play host to two Goal Mile events, both on Christmas Day - at Leabgarrow Beach, Arranmore from 12 noon to 1pm; and at Mountcharles Pier Shoreline, Salthill, Mountcharles from 12 noon to 2pm.
The events are the perfect chance for participants to take on the challenge of running or walking a mile on Christmas Day - and it’s all for a good cause.
Old friends gather, family groups and many with overseas extended family all join in the event to spread some joy at Christmas.
Irish running legend and GOAL Ambassador Eamonn Coghlan said: “The Irish have never been found wanting when it comes to supporting those in our world most in need. We are renowned for our generosity. I think everyone should dust off their running shoes and step out in force this Christmas and do their bit for the greater GOAL”
GOAL Miles are run all over the island of Ireland across Christmas and St Stephen’s Day, with over 160 locations confirmed and more to be organised. To register and take part in a GOAL Mile near you this Christmas, please visit https://www.goalmile.org
