National: 'My health has changed completely' - Charlie Bird shares devastating personal update

Charlie Bird has shared a heartbreaking update with fans and followers, confirming his health has "changed completely".

Commenting on his official X (formerly Twitter) page yesterday (February 11), the former RTÉ journalist (74) - who suffers from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) - stated he now has to be "hoisted in and out of bed".

Bird raised over €3.6 million for Pieta House and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association with his fundraiser, Climb with Charlie, which he launched in 2021.

The veteran journalist completed the climb of Ireland's holiest mountain, Croagh Patrick, in April 2022, with thousands of people participating from across the country and even locations around the world.

His health update comes following the 43rd anniversary of the Stardust Ballroom blaze, which took the lives of 48 people on St Valentine's Day in 1981.

Bird reportedly joined grieving relatives for the anniversary memorial on Saturday (February 11).

He stated: "I want to thank my neighbours and carers for all they are doing for me. I was honoured I was able to join the Stardust relatives yesterday marking the 43rd anniversary of that dreadful night."
