Two young men have been killed in two separate crashes within 12 hours of one another in Cork and Kerry.

A man in his early 20s died in a crash in Co Cork on Thursday morning.

The collision, which happened on the N25 in the townland of Ballyedekin near Midleton shortly before 7.30am, involved a car and an articulated lorry.

The driver of the car died in the collision.

His body was removed from the scene to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital; no other injuries have been reported.

The N25 Midleton to Castlemartyr Road was closed and local diversions were put in place to facilitate a technical examination of the scene by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Separately, a man in his 20s died after two cars collided in Co Kerry on Wednesday.

The crash took place on the N69 at Banemore, Listowel, at around 9pm on Wednesday, gardai said.

A male passenger in one car, aged in his 20s, sustained serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital Kerry where he died on Thursday afternoon.

Three others were taken to hospital for assessment and treatment and their injuries are not life-threatening.

The N69 Listowel to Tralee road has reopened to traffic after examination by Garda forensic collision investigators and the local coroner has been notified.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed either collision or who has footage of the scenes from around the times of the collisions to contact them through local Garda stations or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
