The NCT published a photo of an eight-year-old car with a completely rusted underside.

The National Car Test (NCT) has highlighted a new reason that road-users are failing the car test.

The organisation has warned that “corrosion can turn a seemingly pristine vehicle into a safety hazard”, accompanying an image of a “low-milage” 2017 car with a completely rusted underside.

The new car “recently raised concerns” during the NCT.

On Facebook, a commenter identified the car picture posted by the NCT as his own 2017 Toyota Corolla - and expressed his disappointment that a supposedly good car brand had rusted to such an extremity.

A similarly disgruntled Facebook user said: “NCT only a cod of a job” in response to the warning.

Facebook users offered the following tip to avoid failing the NCT: Wash underneath your car every week in winter, salt will rot it” and to power wash the under side of the car frequently as "mud in the wheel arches can trap moisture and accelerate rust”.

A commentor offered: “Wash underneath your car every week in winter, salt will rot it.”
