The town of Westport, Co Mayo is now in mourning following the deaths of a beloved couple, both of which occurred just hours apart.

Kilmeena’s Anne Mulchrone (nee Walker) and her husband Michael both died in the early hours of Sunday morning, August 17. The couple passed away peacefully at their home in Drumhuskert in the loving care of their family who were by their side.

Speaking to The Mayo News, Kilmeena native and Councillor for the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District, Cllr John O’Malley commented “I knew Anne and Michael well for a number of years, they'd be a well-known family, the Mulchrones. They are a family that are well-respected in the community, their sons would be heavily involved in the GAA club as are many of the grandchildren. Anne and Michael were always very pleasant people to meet. It's obviously a fair shock for the family to lose both of them in a matter of hours as well as it being a loss to the wider Kilmeena community”.

Anne, a native of Cloonacool, Tubbercurry, Co Sligo was predeceased by her parents Bridget and John Walker, her brothers Fr Michael, Jimmy, Sean and Tommy. Michael was predeceased by his parents Dominic and Annie Mulchrone, brothers Padraic and John and sister Teresa Feehan.

They will be greatly missed by their loving children Mary Mulcahy (Jim), Dominic (Ursula), Ann Meesenburg (Sven), John (Tina), Michael (Noreen), Pat (Maura) and Ollie (Ger). They will also be deeply missed by their cherished and adored grandchildren Orla, Conor, Ethan, Josh, Laoise, Sarah, Patrick, Jack, Emer, Sinead, Brian, Hannah, Aine, Megan, Gavin, Kyle and Finn.

Anne and Michael will be sadly missed and remembered with love by their extended family, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and a wide circle of friends.

The couple will repose in the Kilmeena Community Centre on Wednesday, August 20 from 4pm until 7pm with removal at 7:30pm to St Brendan’s Church.

A one way system will be in place entering via Clooneen/Carrowbeg crossroads L5431 and exiting via Buckfield Road L1802.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, August 21 at 1pm with burial afterwards in Myna Cemetery. Their funeral mass can be viewed on www.churchtv.ie/Kilmeena or listened to on radio at 106.3FM (Kilmeena Radio).

May their souls rest in peace.
