'You are not alone' - Domestic abuse victims encouraged to contact Gardaí over holidays

An Garda Síochána is reminding victims of domestic abuse that help is still available over the holiday period. 

A notice published on Garda Twitter stated: "For many people, home is not a safe space when you are sharing the holidays with a domestic abuser. Gardaí want you to know, you are not alone and that we are here to help. Please ring your local Garda Station or 999/112 if you are in danger." 

According to Gardaí, domestic abuse can take a variety of forms including physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and financial abuse.

It can occur within a family between one family member against another and can involve a current or ex-partner, regardless of gender or sexuality. 

After calling 999 regarding an incident of domestic abuse, a Garda in uniform will arrive at the location of the caller in a marked patrol car and will ensure there is no immediate danger.

Those who are not in immediate danger can require advice and assistance by visiting a local Garda Station where you can ask to speak with a Garda in private.

An Garda Síochána encourages victims to report any incident at the earliest opportunity including those of a historical nature.
