The first Donegal patient to receive cancer treatment at the new radiotherapy centre in Derry has been referred to the service.
The centre opened its doors in the last two weeks and will treat 75 patients a day when fully operational.
Health and Social Care Trust Confirmed last week that it has received its first referral from the HSE for the service.
The patient will be seen by clinicals at the £50m centre in the coming weeks.
The North West Cancer Centre at Altnagelvin Hospital was built with €19m funding from the Dublin government.
Of the 1,500 patients who will be seen annually, around 4,00 will be referred from the HSE in Donegal.
The opening of the centre will end the journeys to Galway for treatment for many Donegal cancer patients.
The building of the centre followed campaigning by cancer services campaign groups in Donegal.
The news that the first Donegal patient has been referred to the service was welcomed by Donegal Action for Cancer Care (DACC).
Betty Holmes of DACC said the radiotherapy center will benefit cancer patients all over Donegal.
“This is a good news story. Our first choice was Letterkenny but we were told from the beginning that it would be Derry. This is a really good story and it will benefit Donegal cancer patients.”
Noelle Duddy of Co-operating for Cancer Care NorthWest, said the group is “absolutely delighted and overjoyed that the cross border, North West Cancer Centre at Altnagelvin Hospital is commencing radiotherapy treatments for cancer patients”.
“For us, it is a day to celebrate, our work is done.”
