The peaceful passing of Danny ‘Ellen’ Gallagher, from Lochan Dubh, Belcruit took place at Letterkenny University Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.

Danny was born in Scotland and at the age of seven, his parents and other members of the Gallagher family, returned to live on Owey Island and like all Owey families, they came to live on the mainland in later years.

At the age of 16, Danny went to work in England. Then, in 1969, he met his beloved wife Celia in Killala, County Mayo. Danny and Celia got married there in 1972. Danny moved back to Donegal with Celia and worked for many years in the fish processing factories in Killybegs. Later he worked in the Fish Canning Factory in Meenmore, Dungloe and Burtonport Fisherman’s Co-Op.

Danny was a true gentleman, a mild-mannered man who was loved by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was thoughtful, kind, generous and highly intelligent, yet would be known more for his modesty.

Danny’s funeral took place at St Mary's Church, Kincasslagh celebrated by Rev. Fr. Pat Ward, P.P, who also officiated at Belcruit Cemetery. Readers at the mass were his son David and his granddaughter Aoife. The soloist at the mass was Sinead Cawley, who was accompanied by her father James Cawley (brother-in-law).

Danny was predeceased by his parents James and Ellen, his brother James, sister-in-law Rose, and beloved niece Siobhan. Danny is survived by his wife Celia, sons, James, Danny, John and David, and daughters Rebecca and Lorna. Grandchildren Aoife and Sophie, brothers Charlie, Patrick and Gerard, sister Norah, nephews, nieces and a large family circle to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

Danny (Ellen) Gallagher’s Month's Mind Mass will be held in St Mary's Church, Kincasslagh, on Sunday, February 2, at 10am.
