Ultrarunner Ed McGroarty chimed in the New Year in style when he broke two national records in Kildare.

The Lifford Strabane AC member ran through the countdown at the Le Chéile AC track in Leixlip to set a new National 12-Hour Record of 142km, whilst also clocking a time of 13 hours 47 minutes, he also set a new national 100-Mile Record.

Last September, McGroarty broke the Irish record at the 24 Hour European Championships in Verona, Italy, where he totted up 258.82 kilometres.

Beforehand he retained his Irish title with 255.8 km in Belfast and in 2021, McGroarty became the first Irish ultra runner to break 250km when he set a new mark of 256.57km.
