Mark English will aim for his ninth National Senior Indoor 800m title this weekend.

The Finn Valley AC athlete lines up in the heats of the 800m at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena on Saturday.

English eased to an eighth Irish indoor title last February.

Since then, English won a bronze at the European Championships in Munich and was a whisker away from the World Championship final.

The Letterkenny native has had a solid start to 2023 and is on the countdown to the European Indoors in Turkey next month.

John Kelly, who held the Irish shot put record for a spell last summer and was at the World Championships, will be back from Sweden to compete. Kelly goes up against Irish record holder Eric Favors from Raheny Shamrocks in an intriguing shoot-out with Finn Valley AC’s Gavin McLaughlin also in the mix.

European under-18 silver medalist Fintan Dewhirst will compete in the 200m and his Tir Chonaill AC colleague Lucy McGlynn, who set a new PB when competing at the World Under-20s, has entries in the 200m and 60m hurdles.

Tir Chonaill’s in-form Conall Mahon will look to improve on a bronze from 2022 in the men’s triple jump with reigning champion Jai Benson from Lagan Valley expected to be his biggest barrier.

Finn Valley AC Olympian Brendan Boyce will be in the 5k walk while Sinead McConnell, also of Finn Valley AC, will be in the 3k walk.

Lauren Callaghan will look to continue her fine form in the long jump. Rosses AC duo Fodhla Nic Phaidin and Leah McGarvey will also compete in the long jump.

Bridget McDyer of Finn Valley AC was a silver medalist in the weight for distance last year and will be keen to build on recent positive outings in Dublin this weekend.

Tir Chonaill AC trio Niamh Moohan (60m hurdles), Jack Murphy (pole vault) and Geraldine Stewart (shot put) will also be in action.

Cranford AC’s Oisin Kelly goes in the 400m and 800m while Letterkenny AC’s John McCallion has entered the 3000m.
