Roisin Flanagan lowered the Donegal 5,000m record overnight in California.

The Finn Valley AC woman clocked 15:26.32 to finish seventh.

Flanagan was competing at the Track Fest meet at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the famous Mt. SAC campus. Track Fest is a World Athletics Silver level meeting and is part of the Continental Tour.

Lea Meyer won in 15:06.39.

The 26-year-old Flanagan took 0.42 of a second off the 15:26.76 she set at the Commonwealth Games final in Birmingham last autumn.

Then, Flanagan eclipsed the 15:28.8 of Katy McCandless, who was with Finn Valley when she ran at the Oslo Grand Prix in 1996.

The run on Saturday night gives Flanagan an encouraging start to the outdoor season with the Gortin woman set to return to Ireland to complete at this year’s Irish Senior Championships.

Earlier this year, she took the Donegal indoor 3000m record down to 8:53.50 and last month brought the Donegal record for one mile to 4:36.
