Mark English had a fifth-place finish in a world class 800m in Croatia on Sunday.

English clocked 1:45.56 at the Boris Hanžeković Memorial in Zagreb.

Out of lane 5, the Finn Valley AC runner competed well at the World Athletics Continental Tour, Gold standard meet.

Great Britain’s Daniel Rowden won in 1:44.96 with Gabriel Tual, an Olympic finalist from France, second in 1:45.07.

English was edged by former European silver medallist Andreas Kramer of Sweden and World U20 silver medallist Alex Kipngetich from Kenya for third and fourth. Kramer finished in 1:45.10 with Kipngetich crossing the line in 1:45.14.

Four-time European medal winner English was eighth on Wednesday evening when running 1:46.64 at the Palio Citta' della Quercia in Rovereto.

Palio Citta' della Quercia is a World Athletics Continental Tour silver meet.

At the recent World Athletics Championships in Budapest, English clocked a season’s best 1:45.14 to finish seventh in his semi-final.

In his heat, the Letterkenny native clocked what was then a season’s best time of 1:45.71 to finish fourth despite being bumped by Jamaican athlete Navasky Anderson during the first lap.
